As you may have noticed, I am particularly sensitive to the bird theme. I want to hate it because it is so overdone, but when it is done well, I can’t help but comment. So Terence Conran, I commend you. I adore his Albion collection for Royal Doulton. His whiteware has no frills but enough character to make you notice. On his gravy boat, the spout is sculpted like a graceful neck and its handle rises like tail feathers, but he didn’t have to paint a beak and wings to get the point across. Perfect for dressings or cream, or even as a votive.

These new serving platters from LObjet could not be more gorgeous! Golden bamboo loops like a wreath around the silver Evoka tray. It runs around the perimeter but extends itself at the sides to make a sturdy hand grip. The finish on the silver has a modern shine; it has a brushed metal effect but sterling quality. Formal but far from traditional, this piece will elevate a tables entire presentation.

Talk about ambitious: Nambé just expanded its flatware collection from three to 26 patterns. And even more impressive, they got eight top designers, such as Karim Rashid, Marilyn Davidson, and Lou Henry, to partner with them. They have divided the patterns into three collections: Innovative, Classic Modern, and Inspired. Each category is exquisite (honestly) and in a dishwasher-safe stainless steel—very practical. Be a modernist and save on silver polish; what a deal.

Good design should appeal to both sexes and Thomas O’Brien’s Cynthia decanter does exactly that. The etched crystal decanter was designed to hold whiskey and, you would think, have a more masculine bent. But in a light amethyst blue and with soft curves, the decanter has a stylish, even slightly feminine feel. This isn’t the type of barware to keep hidden in a cupboard, it’s the showpiece for the counter.
